Little Peaks

The Little Peaks Preschool & Early Childhood Center was a multi-year, community-supported initiative to build a preschool and early childhood development center in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Officially categorized as a 'childcare desert', this tourist favorite region of the High Peaks is home to bucolic towns, a growing population of young professionals, an active community of young families - and a dearth of childcare.

The Little Peaks design process was led internally by a volunteer building committee. The building is placed on the site to maximize views and southern exposure, with each classroom having access to south facing windows. The design employs passive heating and cooling techniques by allowing direct light deep into the space during the winter months and providing a large roof overhang to keep southern facing windows shaded during the summer. Solar panels on the roof power the building, its heating/cooling system, and a back-up battery generator. Creating a building with a sustainable mindset, and a respect for nature was a priority throughout the design.
